Join Ben Hooper as he Swims The Big Blue - November 2016

Ever since childhood I have dreamed of swimming across the giant Atlantic monster we call an Ocean. Her depths, mystery and sheer power are all consuming of not only my vivid imagination but our weather, our lives and the lives of those who live in and sail upon her. As a child I have played, dreamed, watched her horse’s race up to our shores and when angry, punish the United Kingdom coastline. I have witnessed and heard stories of sharks, jelly fish, and waves as tall as a cruise ship, mysterious lights and fish that leap out of the sea to greet you. As an adult I have dived beneath her watery body and recreationally swum among her beautiful crests, the most dangerous of territories that is both unpredictable and awesome in appearance. The dream of swimming with her, free and so insignificant in the aquatic hands of Poseidon, conquering the unknown, is frightening, inspiring, exciting and now.

Ben's Charities

  • County Community Projects (CCP), has a vision to prevent homelessness, strengthen families and promote independence and rights. CCP exists to transform lives. Our priority is people who have serious and immediate need, equipping them to meet the demands of an ever evolving society.

  • Ben chose SOS Children's villages as a second charity to support their incredible work of providing houses, schools, parenting classes and other fantastic services to children across the world. These children are inspiring, just as Ben's own daughter inspired Ben for this swim, the SOS Children overcome challenges and the impossible every day just to survive. Now Ben hopes the UK and beyond will help him fundraise up to £1million to ensure this charity's work continues.

  • Ben chose Maggie's because it is a charity close to his heart. Having lost his Aunty at a young age to cancer and a step-mother in the USA, who is a cancer survivor, he knows only too well how vital support, care and information is to both the individual and their family. He also believes that nothing is impossible and that challenges can be overcome, just as those diagnosed with, in remission or surviving cancer have shown: nothing is impossible. The aim is to fundraise £1million and help Maggie's continue to offer free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. Ben hopes to inspire with his challenge and overcome the impossible of swimming The Atlantic Ocean.

  • As you know the past year have been some of the hardest me and my family have ever had to endure. Unfortunately on the 5th October 2013 Henry my 4 year old contracted Ecoli and a disease called HUS which attacks your Kidneys, Stomach and Brain.
